Mom Admits to Psychotic Murder

GEORGIA - A mother tearfully pleaded guilty in Fulton County Superior Court on Tuesday to killing her 8-year-old daughter while in a duel psychotic state with her husband. Valerie Carey, 29, also agreed to testify against her husband if he goes on trial for torturing the little girl to death inside a Downtown Atlanta hotel room.

Police arrested Valerie and Christopher Carey in January of 2004 after the couple was found walking naked down Piedmont Avenue in near-freezing temperatures. They had their two other children, then ages two and six, on their shoulders.

A search of the couple's hotel room turned up the beaten body of Quimani Carey. The little girl had been strangled, stabbed, beaten, and left in the room with pages of the Bible tossed over her body, police said.

The couple characterized the killing to police as the result of a ritual to remove her demons. Valerie Carey said she believed the impending rapture would reunite her whole family in heaven on the planet Jupiter, according to testimony. Carey blamed the ordeal on her husband.

Lawyers for Valerie Carey said she and her husband were both psychotic and playing off of each other's delusions. A defense team investigator said it took 18 months for Carey to emerge from her delusions and become remorseful for what she did.

Valerie Carey admitted to charges of malice murder, felony murder, aggravated assault and cruelty to children in the 1st and 2nd degrees. Judge Tom Campbell sentenced her to life in prison with the possibility of parole.

Christopher Carey is also scheduled to plead guilty in court Nov. 16. The District Attorney's office has asked for a harsher sentence of life in prison without parole for Christopher Carey.
