Apologies Follow Virign Mary Condom Ad
from The Associated Press
NEW YORK - A Jesuit magazine has apologized for inadvertently publishing an ad for a Virgin Mary statue wrapped in a condom.
The headline for the ad read, "Unique Contemporary Religious Art Work for Sale." The text said it was a "statue of the Virgin Mary standing atop a serpent wearing a delicate veil of latex."
The Reverend Drew Christiansen, editor-in-chief of America, says in a note to readers that the condom was not visible in the black and white proofs that were submitted to the magazine.
The statue was made by Steve Rosenthal, who placed the ad to protest the church's opposition to condom use.
