'Christian Rocker' Scott Stapp Gets Drunk, Sucker-Punches 311, Turns Other Cheek (To Better Assault Woman), Gets Ass Handed to Him, Sells No Albums

Scott Stapp and 311 Brawl

from Rolling Stone

At Baltimore's Harbor Court Hotel on Thanksgiving night, members of Los Angeles rockers 311, on a day off from their national tour, got into a fist fight with former Creed frontman Scott Stapp, in town to promote his solo debut, The Great Divide. 311 singer S.A. Martinez suffered a fractured knuckle as a result of the brawl, which the band says Stapp started.

"We had just finished dinner and were at the hotel bar to watch the Lakers game when Scott Stapp walked in being very loud and obnoxious," Martinez tells Rolling Stone. "In fact, one of the first things he said was that he loved to fight. So he started doing shots and breaking the glass on the bar, almost hitting one of our crew guys. My wife and I moved to a table and eventually Scott made his way over and sat down. He was looking for attention. Even before that, he had wadded up a napkin that he lobbed in our direction. It was pathetic, and we tried to ignore him, but it was impossible. Then he made a pretty disrespectful comment to my wife, which I'd rather not repeat, but in no uncertain terms, the word 'fuck' was used. That's when [drummer] Chad [Sexton] walked over."

"I had run into Scott that day," says Sexton. "We have some things in common, like the same producer, and we chatted for a few minutes. So knowing we got along earlier, I kindly asked him not to disrespect anybody and reminded him that we're all friends. That's when he sucker-punched me - hit me right in the face."

"When Scott punched Chad," adds Martinez, "in the follow-through, he hit my wife so then I threw my punch. I think the last time I got into a fight was in the third grade, but it was an instant reaction on my part. [311 bassist] P-Nut also came over and he got sucked into it, opening up a scar on his right arm from a recent surgery. Scott went down, and his girl came over and sat on him to get him to stop, but he got up, enraged, still wanting to fight. After about five minutes, hotel security finally broke it up and kicked him out. Honestly, the hotel was really at fault for not kicking him out when he threw the first shot glass."

Later that night, Martinez went to a local hospital to treat what's called a "boxer's fracture." His right hand is now in a cast, but he was able to perform the following day in Baltimore. "It was different, because I'm used to holding the mike in that hand," he says. "Thankfully, I can still bust a move."

Ironically, before the situation escalated, Stapp had told the members of 311 that he was a fan, according to Martinez. "He was telling us how he'd been to a show of ours in Florida, where he got up on stage, and that he was so thankful that we didn't kick him off," says the singer. "He was saying, 'You had no idea that you guys being so cool to me would inspire me to start a band, and for me to sell 30 million records, win a Grammy, VMAs, Billboard Awards . . .' He just went on and on, like some drunk guy who wouldn't shut the fuck up, while we just wanted to watch the game."

In the end, 311 insist they were acting in self-defense and, according to Sexton, have gone public as a response to rumors to "tell what really happened that so there's no misinformation out there...We're very positive people. We've preached positivity on every record we've made. We don't have altercations like this ever. And we even wish Scott well."

For Stapp, this is not the first such incident. In April of 2001, while a member of Creed, he was involved in a bar brawl in St. Augustine, Florida. Witnesses told Rolling Stone at the time that Stapp threw a punch at a man who had taunted him.

Scott Stapp is a damn dip shit. I hope his record is shot to hell with all this bad PR. What fucking moron to break up a popular band like creed, and then claim the band was him only. Dickhead award for Scott Stapp!!!

well, if mr.stapp considerers himself so chrisitan and god-like, then he has no business sucking down the juice and making an ass out of himself to a group of people that preach nothing but unity and love. so, stapp has proven once again, to be the burnout rockstar. way to scotty!

Christans are people who sin and male mistakes too. Being Christan does not mean being perfect or without fault. We as Christans need God's help to make us better. We will allways sin or fail, but God will always be there for us. Scott knows this. He tries and fails. But at least he has God, do you??

Stapp never claimed to be a christian god-like person in fact denied that creed was a christian band, and he never said HE WAS CREED. In fact said Mark was very talented and wished him and Alter Bridge luck. Now your facts before you speak. My veiws on the bar deal is we all are human and need to blow off steam sometimes, just let it out.

Actually he did recently say in an interview that he was Creed. I know once was on a radio interview this fall, and also in an hard copy interview. Check the web could have been the MTV interview or the one given before the tonight show. He has given several interviews in recent months making comments to that effect. I remember one he said something like Creed morphed into me. As to wishing Mark well, that was after he dissed Mark and the guys on radio and caught alot of crap from fans for it. As for the bar incident, it is very sad especially considering Stapp said he was there celebrating his recent engagement, maybe subconsciencely his not that happy with his decision. He showed up days later to tape a TV show Casino Cinema to promote his cd drunk and made an ass of himself. It aired on Dec 6th. He was wasted, they bleeped just about every other word, and he was hitting on Howard Stern's girlfriend. Stapp had just become engaged on Thanksgiving, not exactly the type of behavior you would expect from a man in love or a man who just released a cd. The bottom line is he only hurts himself with his behavior. He needs the public right now to make him successful, not the other way around. To me his actions speak louder than words. He is not a very happy or contented man. A perfect example of someone who has everything yet nothing.

As for the fight big deal, now that's an intelligent response. Live and Learn, exactly how many times after making the same mistakes do you think someone should learn? He's a 32 year old father when is he going to learn, after his son grows up to be just like him. This guy is a walking time bomb.
PS His album sucked.

Why is everyone so bent on making their point count? If He follows jesus then no man or thing can stop him cause God is with him. If he's not then he'll fade out like a jesus is my homeboy shirt..just a fad. I just pray he finds God great artist or not.

According to rollingstone.com in a recent interview with Stapp he admits to entering rehab after the 311 and Casino Cinema stint. Stapp admits to having a drug and alcohol addiction for the last several years, and he finally admits to being wasted during the infamous Chicago 2001 concert! He also seems to think Creed will reunite someday. When asked to respond, Tremonti said "never" that Scott was a cancer they had to get rid of. Tremonti still today will not listen to a Creed song. He said when the remaining band members and crew get together and discuss the Creed days, its like a reunion of those who served in Nam

He did fade out, he seems to be the only person who doesn't know it. Read the article in Rolling Stone, nothing new, everyone knows he's a drunk and uses. Jerk even admits that he likes them young. He tells RS he would go to college bars and have his bodyguards bring over the young girls to him and keep everyone else away. Only an idiot would say that in an interview.

omg it is so effing annoying when people trash him! he's a man, he makes mistakes. you can be Christian and MAKE MISTAKES! none of you have ever not made a mistake, so quit acting so "holier-than-thou" and shutup. apparently you have nothing better to do with your time than trash someone you don't even know, so do the rest of the world a favor and go find something else to do with your obvious amount of spare time. from what i've heard, he's a really nice guy, he treats everyone with respect, and if you wanna be judgemental and talk crap about someone you don't know, fine. but you really have no idea how stupid you sound and how annoyed the rest of the world gets with your bull shit.

Hey people. I recently just felt that I needed to find out who Scott really is. I've had the great Divide for sometime and was impressed. Even when he was in creed he caught my attention. I feel God in this mans songs. And yes, people make mistakes, and there is consequences even if God has forgiven you spiritually. But dont trash this guy. He tries to be a good, godly man. i hear it in his music. Theres annointing there. I believe this guy is a christian and wants to truly help people. So if you dont like him, cool. But sit here and say that hes a piece of garbage when he wants to change. Dont point the finger at him cause you cant find that love that he has. God will forgive you if you ask. Dont condemn him for asking. I got your back scott.

This was so long ago, but somehow I happened on this page and I can't help but laugh. How can you go from telling some dudes that you love their music and you're such a huge fan, to sucker punching their drummer in the face? In fact, my eleventh grade English teacher went to college in Florida with Stapp, and she said he was an alcoholic with ten kinds of V.D. Used to brag about how many women he had slept with.

All of this despite the fact that his music sucks balls. 311 got the last laugh.

as 311 says it "it's one thing to make the same mistake twice, its another thing to make it all of your life"----"another detail just goes by fallen into the abyss that has become your life"

lets face it stapp's life is a damn wreck. he might be christian but for most people that is just a claim...

311= unity!!!
